My Campervan Conversion

An overview of a self build project

For many years my wife and I took our holidays on the Norfolk Broads. The Broads cruisers are a fabulous way of taking a relaxing holiday with all the onboard amenities at hand. All you need to do is to study the tide tables, apply a little skill with the throttle and steering and eventually the boat will go in a straight line. But after so many years, a change of scenery was in order!

A motorhome would be nice. Everything you need to go touring in one package. All you need is the time, oh! and the money of course, lots of it!

So, campervan it is then! But, after  spending many months trawling the internet looking for a decent used camper that wasn't worn out inside, or mechanically suspect within my budget, I decided to have a go at converting a van myself.

Van conversion
Most people will tell you to buy the best van you can afford, which makes sense. But if like me, your budget is small, choice is limited. So I opted to look for an old medium wheelbase Sprinter, with the legendary 5 cylinder 2.9 Turbo diesel engine. These engines cover enormous mileages and are powerful and reliable.
The van cost £2,500. You can see how I got on with the basic van on 'The Van' page.
